Nicole Schutz is a Métis music educator originally from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. With 24 years of experience as a music specialist with Edmonton Public Schools, she has also taught music education courses at the University of Alberta, including Orff Levels movement. Nicole has just stepped into the role as a First Nations, Metis and Inuit teacher consultant with Edmonton Public schools.

She holds a Master of Education in Curriculum and Pedagogy, a Bachelor of Arts, and a Bachelor of Education, as well as Level III Orff certification and a World Music Pedagogy certificate from the Smithsonian Institute. Nicole is president of the Alberta Orff Chapter, a teacher advisor for MusiCounts Canada, and an active member of Carl Orff Canada’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee.

Passionate about Indigenizing music education, Nicole co-created Nîthota, an Indigenous Music Educator’s Guide for the National Arts Centre’s Arts Alive Program, and co-authored MusiCounts’ Wîtaskêwin resource guide. She is a collaborator on a national music education research team and she presents nationally on integrating Indigenous music into music classrooms.

Nicole was introduced to the Korora Choir Association when her son joined the first Tamariki choir 13 years ago! She sings in Òran with her husband James and is thrilled when they perform with their son Nathan, who now sings with Korora.
